Resisting Hair Growth Remedies via Transitioning Movement

Hey :o)

Check out my latest post on Carol's Daughter's Transitioning Movement site - Resisting Hair Growth Remedies.

Here's a bit of what I wrote - click the link above or the pic to read more...

I know for me, when I was on the transitioning journey – for the third time mind you – I would just drool over photos of women sporting their natural hair and couldn’t bare the wait until my hair was chemical free. I remember taking down my transition styles each month with anticipation, excited to see if by some miracle my new growth had grown over its usual 1/2 inch.

I was super excited when I came across Mane ‘n Tail – now this wasn’t the Mane ‘n Tail they have on the store shelves today made for humans – this was the original straight from the farm bottle with directions telling me I could use it to condition and clean my hooves as well. I’ll tell you I went through who knows how many bottles of that shampoo. But in the end I had the same results 1/2 inch of growth a month!

Paul Mitchell Launch: The Truth About Curls

Hey everybody :o)

Paul Mitchell has launced a campaign for curly hair wearers - ladies and men, the campaign is called The Trught About Curls. The inspiration behind the campaign is, "the emotional relationship curly-haired consumers have with their hair – from the joys and the struggles, to the passion and the love they’ve all experienced with their hair."

The Truth About Curls site is so cool, you can go over to the site and add your pic and culy hair confession amongst - it has hundreds of pictures and videos already from celebrities, people from all backgrounds and ethnicities sharing their curly hair confessions via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or directly through The Truth About Curls site.

The site features, surveys, product informaition, contests and also  a Curl-O-Meter - where you can enter your zip code and it will give you a 'frizz forecast' percentage for the area where you live.

Check out the rest of the press release ...

“With ‘The Truth About Curls,’ we want to inspire people to embrace their natural texture, and to inspire conversations about what life with curls is really like,” said Nanette Bercu, senior vice president of creative and advertising, JPMS, who oversaw the development of ‘The Truth About Curls’ multi-platform launch campaign. “Through a range of platforms including partnerships with influential bloggers, social media, a dedicated microsite, events and advertising, ‘The Truth About Curls’ will connect the curly community and drive a global curl conversation.”
JPMS made the decision to push the boundaries of its marketing for the launch of Paul Mitchell Curls by focusing on digital and social marketing to effectively target the next generation of Paul Mitchell fans, who consume much of their media online.

JPMS’s digital strategy also included the creation of an interactive microsite that will act as the hub for the online curl conversation, which updates in real time and serves up curl confession posts shared by fans around the world on Instagram and Twitter. “We wanted to create a forum for the curly-haired to share their truths about life with curls, so that the campaign is being driven by and created by the consumer,” said Orion Hand, director of web marketing, JPMS.
The microsite also features a “Curl-o-Meter” for users to obtain their “frizz forecast” in their zipcode, user polls, curl confession videos taped during the shooting of “The Truth About Curls” advertising campaign, and Paul Mitchell Curls product information. Fans will also be able to ask questions on styling tips and tricks that Paul Mitchell artists will respond to on Paul Mitchell’s social media pages.
As part of “The Truth About Curls” multi-faceted campaign, JPMS will be highlighting the new Paul Mitchell®Curls collection at a series of major events this fall, with interactive brand experiences at the Seventeen U college campus tour, Teen Vogue’s Generation Next fashion show, and national sorority events. Consumers attending the events will be able to discover the truth about curls, submit their own curl confessions, get styling tips, and receive samples of Paul Mitchell Curls products. JPMS is also targeting bi-cultural, Hispanic consumers through an interactive experience at the Latin GRAMMY® Street Parties Tour. For a calendar of events, please visit www.facebook.com/paulmitchellhaircare.
Instead of utilizing professional models for its "The Truth About Curls” advertising campaign, JPMS sought out real women and men to feature in its ads. “It was important to us that we use real people in our ads who were relatable to our audience, and who would be able to bring the campaign message to life in a way that was relevant and authentic,” said Bercu. A variety of women and men from all walks of life were shot for the campaign, including a dancer, Paul Mitchell-sponsored athletes, and even students from Paul Mitchell Schools.

Be sure to head over to The Truth About Curls site to add your pic and curl confession :o)

Giveaway: Win a Box of Bobeam Products

Hey everybody!

In conjunction with Hair's A Cure, an organization that promotes, "Hair Just as Healthy as Breasts" I/Bobeam Natural Hair Products is hosting another giveaway!

I believe that the Hair's a Cure organization is fighting for an excellent cause - and i/Bobeam Products will be one of the sponsors for the organization's first annual fundraising event in Chicago on October 20, 2012 (for more information contact hairsacure@gmail.com).

More on Hair's A Cure:

Hair's A Cure is a current event (future foundation) that seeks to celebrate the love of healthy hair and bodies, while raising awareness and funds for breast cancer -- predominantly in the African American race. .It also has the long term goal of creating an organization that funds cancer treatment for African American men and women who can not afford it.

Cancer Facts via Hair's A Cure

African American women collectively spend millions, if not billions, every single year in order to obtain “healthy hair;” however, thousands die every year from the results of breast cancer. And did you know that studies show most African American women who die of breast cancer were likely without the means of proper insurance or money in order for cancer treatments and/or an early diagnosis?

Did you also know?

1. By 2007, 41% of all African American women had a higher death rate who were diagnosed with breast cancer?

2. Breast cancer is more common in African-American women under 45 than white women?

3. African-American women are more likely than all other women to die from breast cancer because tumors often are found at a later, more advanced stage?

4. Of the estimated 26,840 new occurrences of breast cancer found in black women in 2011, over 6,000 of them died? Most importantly, did you know that it doesn’t have to be that way? Hair is a huge part of our culture and our identity -- we spend a plethora of time, money and effort into finding a remedy for healthy and beautiful hair.

If we spent only a quarter of the money and effort into our health, we would not only decrease our rates of breast cancer, but we would also afford cancer treatments for women who can’t afford it

Giveaway Details

The goals  of this giveaway is to bring more awareness to Hair's A Cure and its wonderful cause.  The winner will receive a box of Bobeam Natural Product Goodies (including some things I have under wraps to be released later this year). Kim Coles on OWN

I came across this piece on The ROOT one of my favorite online news mags. I thought it was great insight on Kim Coles - wearing her hair natural in show biz, and her new show on OWN  - Are You Normal, America?

Check out the entire piece below written by Lathleen Ade-Brown  (yep I copied and pasted - lol but see link and author info below)

The Root) -- Is it normal for married women to be disappointed in their wedding ring? Is it normal to allow your grown children over the age of 18 to sleep with their girlfriend or boyfriend in your home? Some Americans may be reticent about revealing their private antics, but not the contestants on OWN's game show Are You Normal, America?

The prime-time series poses bizarre questions to in-studio contestants, people on the street and a "jury" of real Americans to find out who's normal and who's not.
Who better than comedic queen Kim Coles to co-host the show? "To be part of Oprah's brand is a good place to be," Coles told The Root.

The seasoned actress is best known for her hilarious role as Synclaire James on the 1990s hit sitcom Living Single. After auditioning for her chance to make history with Oprah Winfrey on her network, Coles won the producers over and landed her spot on the show.

The 50-year-old caught up with The Root to talk about what it's like to work for Winfrey, whether she'd ever change her natural hair for a gig and OWN's critics.

The Root: What is it like working with and being around Oprah Winfrey?

Kim Coles: She was on the set a couple of times; you can absolutely feel her energy. You can feel her benevolence -- it's clear -- and you can absolutely feel her power. She told me that I was doing a good job and she was pleased with what was going on with the show. I can tell the show has turned out the way she has envisioned it to be.

TR: How did you end up working with Oprah and OWN?

KC: The show idea came about because it was a segment on one of Oprah's shows, and she liked it so much that she decided to have it developed into a full-blown game show. I got the part because I auditioned for it ... I'd like to say that once they saw me, they were like, "Boom, we got our girl." I earned this one the good old-fashioned way.

TR: If this show or any future movies or shows required you to perm your hair, would you do it?

KC: This natural-hair journey is a very personal journey. I would not have permed my hair; I have not had a relaxer in my hair since 1990. There is also this notion that people who work in corporate America can't wear their hair natural.
I do think there are ways around it and a way to break the mold -- it is your hair, you can do what you want to do with your hair. I applaud any company or business [that] is allowing people to be who they are.

TR: Did the producers say anything or make suggestions about your hair?

KC: Here's what's interesting: I found out that Oprah was sent several pictures of me. They went researching me and they got pictures, and I heard Oprah said, "What is she going to do with her hair? Whatever she wants to do is fine with me ... " I'm paraphrasing, but it came back to me like that.

TR: What do you have to say to the critics who suggest that OWN is a struggling network?

KC: It's a new network; give it time to grow and watch Oprah shine. I don't understand how people compare things. There is room to grow; we are comparing it to networks that have been around for years. I think what she's doing with Super Soul Sunday is phenomenal; there's a segment called "Breathing Space."
She's creating something that has not been done before. it can't be compared to anything else. I don't think anyone should compare it. The statistics do not apply! I'll say this: Oprah Winfrey and her network are incomparable. Stop trying to put statistics on it.

I sat and watched her interviews with Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer, and you know something? There are no ratings to rate that. What she's putting out there to feed people's souls can't be counted on a Nielsen box.

TR: On your show, you try to figure out if contestants are normal. What are some of the things you do that aren't deemed normal?

KC: I'm actually a little weird in some areas. I'm afraid of revolving doors; I don't think that's normal ... I also carry my own tea bags wherever I go, so all I need is a cup of hot water. Who takes their own tea bags to a restaurant? When I'm in the mood for tea, I want my tea! That's not normal.

Also, what I do for a living isn't normal. I'm not a normal actress. I have chosen to stay as a Renaissance woman, so to speak. I'm an actress, a comedian, a playwright, an author, a producer, a speaker -- I'm not even a normal entertainer. But yet I'm a normal girl, and I have the same feelings that everyone else does. I'm normal in that I want to love and be loved. I'm normal in that I still shop at the 99-cent store and Target.

Are You Normal, America? airs Saturday nights at 10 p.m. EST/9 p.m. CST on OWN.

"Natural High" Natural Hair Inspiration Video

I came across this video on YouTube (gotta love YouTube :o) It was posted by Vlogger Stacy aka Coil Queen creator of MissENTF YouTube channel. Her channel is wonderful, by the way, so be sure to subscribe and check out her videos. Her (Noun) is the Devil video is hilarious.

The song in the video was written and performed by her boyfriend Caesar and it features several natural hair ladies from YouTube. Check out the video below :o)

Lyrics

Natural High Lyrics:

Verse 1-
Forgive me if I'm forward see
It's safe to say you're gorgeous/ If you noticed I was noticing
Hoping that you noticed me/ Heartbreak if I missed out
You sexy rockin' that twist out/ Who told you that was my favorite?
That natural hair I crave it/ Those braid outs be A list (but)
This more than/ "What your math is?"
Beauty is your name/ You're embodying what class is
Probably think I'm full of it/ Trust me I ain't new to this
You can be my drug/ I can show you what an addict is
Attracted to your passion/ Baby I can form a habit quick
I can see your gifted/ I get lifted by your confidence
I'm faded by your elegance
Way beyond the physical/ You can say I'm smitten though
Forgive my eyes baby/ Disrespect I mean none
I'm mesmerized/ Don't be surprised
That twist out/ Got me on one
I know a queen/ When I see one

Hook
You the bomb baby/ Beyond a ten
Nubian goddess/ That is African
I just want to let you know/ I think your natural hair is beautiful

Verse 2-

Beautiful/ I mean breathtaking
You're naturally a goddess/ We should celebrate it
Can I uplift/ What God already elevated?
Shall I digress or/ Can I confess?

Pardon me/ I'm just trying to let my heart speak
Your beauty's penetrating/ Way beyond that skin deep
You're skin's sweet/ But I love the way your mind thinks
I love the way your mouth speaks/ I love the way your heartbeats
So, if you're feeling what I'm asking
No lie(lye) we should relax then
Oh that made you laugh huh?
Sexy and sophisticated/ Sense of humor drives me crazy
We could talk for/ Hour after hour without hesitation
Getting faded off our conversation
This is heaven/ Though I haven't died
No artificial flavors/ You're my natural high

Celebrating Black History Month with Soul Train and Ultra Sheen

I decided to repost this Black History post in dedication to Don Cornelius may he rest in peace...

In August of 2010, Time Life commemorated Soul Train's 40th Anniversary with the release of a DVD box set. The box set includes interviews with the Soul Train Dancers, and show performers, their live show performances, as well as the classic commercials from the Soul Train sponsors Ultra Sheen and Afro Sheen :o)

Soul Train premiered on WCIU-TV on August 17, 1970 as a live show that aired on weekday afternoons. In October of 1971, Soul Train aired in national syndication with co-sponsor the Johnson Products Company.

The Johnson Product Company’s Ultra Sheen and Afro Sheen commercials were some of the first of their kind, produced exclusively for black audiences. The company was launched in 1954 after George Johnson borrowed $500–half from a bank and the other half from a friend. It was the first hair care brand developed specifically for African American hair.

The company’s first product was Ultra Wave, a hair relaxer for men. By the end of the 60s, the company boasted annual sales of over $10 million, and during the 70s Johnson Products ranked as the largest African American–owned manufacturing company in the nation.

Soul Train aired throughout the “Black is Beautiful” movement which was birthed from the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. “Black is Beautiful” was primarily responsible for the Afro’s popularity.

This movement encouraged blacks to feel good about how they looked, and attempted to undue the notion that their natural traits were ugly.

The "Black is Beautiful" movement advocated black women and men to embrace their natural features, by encouraging them to stop straightening their hair and bleaching their skin. The images portrayed on Soul Train and the Ultra Sheen commercials reinforced this notion...

If you would like to read more on Soul Train and/or the Ultra Sheen commercials check out - Blackness In All Its Beauty an article I had the opportunity to write for Soul Train's website.

Check out one of the popular Ultra Sheen Commercials that featured Afros, Puffs and Cornrows :o)

I had to post a Soul Train line dance vid :o) This features Fred Wesley and The JBs' song Doing It To Death.
